E.coli Infection Kills Woman In France
A 78-year-old woman has died in France after being treated for an E.coli infection in the south-western city of Bordeaux, regional health officials say.
The patient, who developed a very severe form of hemolytic uremic syndrome, had been in intensive care in a Bordeaux hospital since June 24, the Aquitaine regional health agency said in a statement.
The French Ministry of Health said last week that a deadly strain of E. coli that has sickened thousands of people in Germany appeared to have resurfaced in France.
However, testing showed the woman who died overnight Friday to Saturday did not carry that strain of E.coli, the regional health agency said.
She also had no link to a children’s recreation center near Bordeaux where several people ate sprouts linked to the E.coli outbreak, the agency said.
Seven people remain in hospital in France, health officials said, of whom six have the strain of E.coli found in the German infections. Their condition is described as stable.
There had been 49 deaths associated with the German outbreak as of July 1.
