Connie Culp : Face Transplant Recipient Meets Donor’s Family
The weekend get-together was “awesome” after some initially awkward moments. Connie Culp spent about 90 minutes with the husband and children of donor Anna Kasper, who died of a heart attack.
Becky Kasper, 23, said she could even see a resemblance to her mother in Ms Culp’s reconstructed face, despite their differing bone structure.
In 2004, Ms Culp’s husband shot her in the face. The blast destroyed her nose, shattered her cheeks, and destroyed most of her vision. Her features were so gnarled that children fled, calling her a monster.
When Ms Kasper, of Cleveland, died in December 2008 a specialist approached her family about donating her face. The family had already decided to give away her heart, her kidney, her liver and her eyes, and agreed in minutes.
