ATLANTA, July 26 (UPI) — Children dying of chickenpox has almost been eliminated since the introduction of a vaccine in 1995, U.S. researchers say.
Dr. Mona Marin, John X. Zhang and Jane F. Seward of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta say previous studies reported a 66 percent decline in chickenpox mortality rate during the first six years of the program.
However, since then, vaccination coverage has increased substantially. The researchers updated the analysis of U.S. chickenpox mortality for 2002 to 2007 and assessed the impact of the first 12 years of the chickenpox.

Beachgoers are being warned to stay out of the water this weekend at four popular beaches around New York City after raw sewage from a Manhattan plant spilled into the Hudson River, authorities said.
Health advisories also have been issued for portions of the Hudson River, the East River, the Harlem River and the Kill Van Kull, cautioning people against participating in water-related activities such as canoeing, kayaking and swimming, according to the New York City Department of Health.
The sewage spill began Wednesday after a fire began in the engine room of the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant, according to a press release Friday from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.
The sewage spill was stopped Friday night, and two of the engines damaged by the fire have been brought back online, the department said.
The health advisories were issued for South Beach, Midland Beach and Cedar Grove Beach on Staten Island, and Sea Gate in Brooklyn, according to the release.
The beaches are not closed, but the New York City Department of Health recommends that people not swim or enter the water at those locations. Full post…

A DoH guidance document on the Any Qualified Provider policy, published this week, outlined that commissioners must offer a choice of three providers for a range of services.
But GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman warned that the ‘unavoidable implication’ of this drive is that commissioners will have to commission from private providers.
He said: ‘The government would say, “Well that’s alright because if they are providing NHS services at an NHS tariff, why does it matter?”.
‘Our answer is it does matter because services should be provided by the NHS or by people who are employed in the service.’
Dr Buckman also said it is now clear that clinical commissioning groups will have little freedom to make decisions and instead will be continually dictated to by a number of other bodies, including the NHS Commissioning Board.
